Travel: 4 Travel Apps That Plan Your Trips

Despite the presence of smartphones, many travel formalities are still stuck in the 20th century. We print paper tickets and reservation confirmations, directions and itineraries. But savvy travelers have turned to apps that will organize all these odds and ends in one place for easy access.

Bonus: They also offer features that prevent pitfalls like missed flights or simply make life on the road more convenient.

Here are a few of our favorites:

TripIt

TRIPIT.COM
The setup is simple: Just forward all those confirmation emails you receive—car rental, flight, hotel, dinner, whatever—to TripIt and the app “automagically” assembles them as trip itineraries in one handy location. The free version is perfect for casual travelers, but million-milers will want to opt for TripIt Pro ($50/annual), which adds flight alerts, airline refund tracking, complimentary access to some business lounges, and best of all, an alternate flight checker that finds open seats to the same destination. Catching the last flight home before a storm hits (and other travelers get word) is worth the price of admission alone.

TripCase

TRIPCASE.COM
As with the other apps, TripCase gathers confirmation emails and auto-assembles them as a convenient trip portfolio. What makes TripCase ideal for work travel is that it’s made by Sabre, the giant travel-tech company, so a wide range of partner services work seamlessly with the app—whether you need a record locater from a travel agency or an itinerary from Travelocity. Unlike some other apps, flight status notifications are free.

WorldMate

WORLDMATE.COM
In addition to pulling together an easy-to-navigate itinerary,WorldMate has LinkedIn integration, which, for social media addicts, is a godsend that makes connecting with clients on the road effortless. To receive flight alerts, alternative schedules, and to sync with a mobile calendar requires a bump up to Gold membership (available for $10). For iPhone users, that also includes exclusive features such as hotel price alerts, booking express info (which saves details on prior car rentals and hotel reservations), and “counter offers” of discounts or upgrades.

Roadtrippers

ITUNES.APPLE.COM
A terra-centric departure from the other options,Roadtrippers takes the guesswork (and frustration, and panic, and self-loathing) out of car trips. Enter your starting point and destination and the app will map the route; then click on the Places tab and look for reco
