Travel: Savvy Sun Protection Tips for Spring Break

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a person's risk for melanoma doubles after five or more sunburns, making skin protection a priority for families preparing to hit sunny destinations this spring break.

It can be overwhelming getting everyone packed and ready, and bringing along sun protection is often overlooked.

Here's some tips you may not have thought of...

Teach kids that being safe in the sun is as important as wearing a bike helmet!

Make sure to wear lightweight clothing that is tightly woven (t-shirts do NOT block UV rays!), and contains a UV protection factor of 50.

A good choice is Coolibar. They create clothing with UPF of at least 50. That's sun protection in your clothing!

They guarantee it to never wash out or fade.
Sun-protective clothing is the BEST way to ensure skin is protected from UV when out in the sun.

Of course, pack your own sunscreen whenever possible to ensure it will be readily available, and to save some money. Popular vacation destinations often double or triple the price of sunscreen on-site.

But, here's what get you: make sure to reapply sunscreen to areas not covered with clothing EVERY two hours! Most of us apply when we start the day, and forget, when done swimming, and after lots of sweating.

Hats are a huge defense against UV exposure! Longer brims add protection to the neck, shoulders and torso, as well as the face and top of the head. For every inch of brim, you reduce your lifetime risk of skin cancer by 10%.
This is the Coolibar Santa Cruz reversible hat tan/white. $36. This is a great hat for tours or excursions while on vacations. It's cotton, so easy to clean. Foldable, so easy to pack.

This is the Coolibar Wide Brim Cotton Sun Hat in white. $45. This is a great wide brim beach hat. (You can't tell here because my hair is so big!) I love it because it's foldable - easy to pack, you can shape it, and easy to clean.

*I like to choose white and tan hats because my hair is black. Sure, white hats get dirty...or show more visible dirt, but you will be much cooler and it doesn't blend with my hair.

In 2014, the acting Surgeon General issued a ³Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer² because skin cancer rates continue to increase, even though most cases of skin cancer are preventable. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends sun protective clothing as the first line of defense.
