Is there anyone who doesn't know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Probably not. Do you know how many ways there are to support the cause? Every little bit counts!
The American Cancer Society Reports that in 2015 it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be:
• 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer
• 40,290 breast cancer deaths

Bernadette Z. Simpson's Story:
I am a 2 time breast cancer survivor that was first diagnosed at the age of 42. At the time, I was unemployed and had no health insurance. When you are in that situation, you don’t know where to turn when you find something suspicious on your body. Because I was uninsured, I received a grant from Susan G. Komen Charlotte with my first diagnosis that paid for my mammogram and my biopsy. Thankfully, I was able to get these treatments which determined that I did in fact have breast cancer. That saved my life. I was again diagnosed this year at the age of 49. Fortunately, I had health insurance this time.

Fundraising for the Race for the Cure is important to me because I want to give back to others. Someone raised funds that ultimately helped me get the treatments I needed, so I try to give back by doing the same thing. Early detection is key. In fact, my second diagnosis was made after I went for my yearly routine mammogram. If people have access to these free tests, it can save lives.
