My 30 day yoga challenge thanks to Groupon

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

I've been blessed, because for most of my life I have never really had to worry much about managing my weight.

In fact, in junior high school I went to my mother and asked for some weight gainer smoothy mix from GNC because the teasing about how skinny I was affecting my self esteem. Little did I know, that if I waited 10  or 15 more years everything would work out and fill out! In fact, it was age 26 when I noticed that "eating whatever I wanted" left it's mark.
But still...I have not had to curb or monitor my food intake.

With the student advisor, as I was president of the Black Student Union.

So slowly, I have grown a little belly. It's not outrageous, and is easily disguised by clothing. But on a recent trip to Turks & Caicos, I felt it was finally time to pay some attention to creating the body and shape that I want.

Because I travel quite frequently, my fitness routine, which consists of mostly playing tennis, has been thrown out of wack this entire year. I decided to snap it back and wanted to add yoga to the mix. So I went to Groupon to search local studios in my area.

Using Groupon for health and wellness experiences is nothing new to me. When I lived in Charlotte, I purchased Groupons for ariel yoga, cross fit and barre fitness classes. It is an awesome way to try out something without fully committing to long term membership. Also, the classes are extremely discounted, so if you decided early on that you want to abandon the workout, it's not a big loss.

So, in anticipation of a big conference I was attending - one where I had to look my best day and night as I was hosting two events and workshops among my professional peers - I decided to take on a 30-day Bikram yoga challenge.

I found a studio that offered unlimited classes for 30 days! It was an extreme bargain because each individual class is $18, and a 10-class pass is $150.

I gave myself the challenge to make the most of the unlimited pass and aimed for 15 classes. That's a class every other day.

I only had one major trip planned that month, so it was totally doable. There was the hiccup that the class was 30 minutes away. But it Atlanta, I needed to account for traffic. So, this commitment not only took mental determination, but also a huge chunk out of my day - 1-hour commute, 90 minute class, 1/2 - 1 hour return. On average it was about 4 hours away from work and daily duties.

So I had a few missed classes, false starts, and a few times of getting halfway there and having to turn around because I would be late along the way. But I am happy to report that I have completed 14 classes of Bikram yoga in my 30 day challenge.
I lost 5 pounds in one month. I'm more flexible than ever. And I have finally figured out the kind of yoga that I can see myself practicing for a long time.

In the end, I just wanted to share how I use Groupon to test out experiences that I am curious about.

What experience have you tried on Groupon? Let us know and we'll post it here!
