How to Fall in Love - (With Yourself)

It's often said that it's difficult to love someone else until you love yourself. I'm not sure if I subscribe to that belief or not, but I wholeheartedly support learning to think of yourself as worthy of love.

It's a difficult journey, this whole loving yourself thing. Along the way, I have learned much about who I am - and who I'd like to be. I'm inspired by one of my best friends, who, in her daily actions, has taught me the following lessons. Try them for yourself. Be your own valentine this year!

Treat Yourself:

I think that women in general tend to think of everyone else first. It's not a bad thing to be selfless. But it's more than ok to look out for yourself as well. Take yourself on a shopping spree. Try a new haircut. Get a makeover. Indulge in your favorite past time. Whatever it is that makes you feel happy, do it.

Find Your Bliss:

What are you passionate about? It could be anything from art to human rights. If you find it brings you to that blissful state, make time for it. You're worth it. As Dayvee Sutton would say, chase your dreams.

Feed Your Soul:

I truly believe every life has a purpose. What is it that lifts your soul? For some, it's serving at Church. For others, it's all about altruism or mission work. It could be that traveling and experiencing as many cultures as possible is what makes you feel complete. Spend some time thinking about what does or will make you feel whole - and then do it. Often.

Improve Yourself:

Self improvement comes in many forms: learning new things; expanding your horizons; becoming a healthier, fitter version of yourself; clearing the clutter from your life. The possibilities are endless. The best part is that mastering one new habit allows you to move on to others, leaving you room to grow.

Share the Love:

Now that you're learning to love yourself, share that feeling. Be conscious of others. Practice random acts of kindness. Share uplifting words. You'd be surprised how far a smile and eye contact will go for someone who is having a bad day.

How will you treat yourself this Valentine's Day?
