Unique hotels in Central Portugal

A nation full of ancient tales of queens and kings, medieval times, the Moors to finally settling on a border with Spain, which happens to be one of the oldest non-changing borders in Europe.

The central region of Portugal is often overlooked, but it shouldn’t be. It offers a spectrum of landscapes and cultural nuances.
And I had four days to explore.
I stayed at three pretty cool boutique hotels along the way.

The Literary Man Óbidos Hotel
Óbidos, Portugal
The delightful town of Óbidos is full of white houses adorned with bougainvilleas and honeysuckle. The history is it was captured from the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148. D. Dinis. Later the king presented the castle to his wife, Queen Santa Isabel. From then until 1883, the town of Óbidos and the surrounding land was always the property of the queens of Portugal.

The hotel is a nod to the town being declared a literary town, an initiative of Óbidos City Hall and the book store Ler Devagar. So you'll see book collections and for sale in stores throughout town. In this hotel, books are the decor through the halls, the dining room/library/bar, and even in your room.

We arrived on my first night, so we enjoyed a typical Portuguese meal.

Cooking & Nature - Emotional Hotel
Alvados, Portugal

Located in of Portugal’s most beautiful valleys at the heart of the Natural Park of Aire and Candeeiros Mountain, this family project allows an escape in the rural environment of the village of Alvados. Surrounded by scattered houses, dry-stone walls and oak forests, as far as the eye can reach, the hotel is built near one of the oldest living olive tree forests and ancient traditions.

In autumn, you will see here the Golden eagle flying around, but, you can take a walk or hike mushroom picking while listening to the song of the Eurasian eagle-owl.

In spring time, keep your eye out for rare orchids and roses, just out your door.

Luz Houses
Fàtima, Portugal

The Luz Houses have the sweetest touch. Everywhere you look there is an adorable detail.

From the reception with quirky chotzkies, birds and feathered lamps, you'll be greeted with tea and candy! There's a sitting room full of things to play with - guitars, old fashioned toys and board games. It's a great social area.

Before you walk in the dining area, there's a tree full of paper hearts with messages from guests who have stayed there. (Be sure to add your note before you leave.)

The food comes with just as much adorable details. Nothing is missed.

The rooms are so sweet. Lace mixed with light colored wood trim it the theme. There were adorable note cards and even a note from the staff on a chalk board to welcome me! Another surprise awaited me on the desk - candy!

The bed was cozy and comfortable. Even the toilet paper had a special touch - every day after the room was cleaned, the room keeper would emboss it with the hotel's logo!

  3. This blog post makes me so jealous of you! Portugal is often overlooked and in its current state of affairs, with regards to its economy, sometimes we may disregard its colorful history (and food). Thank you for making us remember it.
