The “First Coast” area of Florida stretches from the Georgia border down 95 to just north of Daytona Beach, and includes the city of Jacksonville. Just about 25 miles from the Georgia border, Jacksonville is the largest city in America by land area, at a staggering 840 square miles.

The city center is teeming with boutiques and bistros, all within walking distance. You can also get around using the monorail system that connects the banks of two of the three rivers upon which Jacksonville sprawls. The many connecting bridges and lights reflected in the water are must-see viewing after dark.

Add some culture to your life with a visit to the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens or discover an upcoming Broadway musical at the Thrasher Horne Center. Maybe you prefer the outdoors, take a boat ride down the Intercoastal Waterway for a different perspective on the city. Don’t forget the miles of beaches that make up part of the greater Jacksonville area. Get your surf on at Neptune Beach, cast a line at Atlantic beach, or try your hand at Kite surfing at Jacksonville Beach.

Jacksonville offers a diversity of activities that will be sure to please even the most discriminating traveler. The weather in Jacksonville is warm year-round, with the coldest month being January, which boasts an average high temperature of 66 degrees.

St. Augustine

Less than an hour south you will find the historic town of Saint Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. Yes, there is history here, besides the proximity to the beach. Saint Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565. You can visit the 144 block-long National Historic Landmark District to learn everything you need to know about St. Augustine. Experience the atmosphere that makes Saint Augustine a compelling place to visit. The amazing history of the area is on display at its many excellent museums. The centuries-old architecture adds to the authentic ambiance. Accommodations include a myriad of Bed and Breakfast options. There are also numerous culinary choices including fine dining, which has become a hallmark of Saint Augustine’s culture.

Daytona Beach

Finally, if you traverse the entire length of the First Coast, you might as well stop at racing Mecca Daytona Speedway. In February, NASCAR nation will descend on Daytona Beach in force for the legendary Daytona 500. Daytona also has a beach that gets some attention annually for a little thing they call spring break, in case you are interested.

No matter what you like to do, a trip to northern Florida will afford you the opportunity and the weather to do it. Unless it’s skiing, that is.
