Texas is the second biggest US state behind Alaska. It’s also the 4th most visited state in the US behind Florida, California and Nevada. Here are just five great reasons to take a trip to the Lone Star State.
See the city sights
Texas is home to a number of iconic cities, each with their own appeal. There’s Austin – known for its love of the eccentric and its vibrant nightlife, this city is a popular tourist hotspot for younger crowds, and home to the famous South by SouthWest (SXSW) festival. There’s also San Antonio – this is the most historical of the Texas cities and offers a much more laid-back vibe. There are also lots of things to do in Dallas – this is the most urban of Texas’s cities offering skyscrapers and no shortage of shopping opportunities. And then there’s Houston, which is a combination of the other three cities, containing attractions such as the Space Center Houston and Houston Grand Opera.
Taste the local cuisine
Texas is renowned for is its food. Some argue that it’s the barbecue capital of America and the best place to try beef brisket. Texas’s Mexican influence has led to it’s famous Tex-Mex cuisine including it’s bean-less chili and King Ranch casserole. As for desserts, pecan pie is one of the state’s most beloved options. You’ll find great restaurants all across the state where you can taste these foods in their authentic form.
Embrace the cowboy culture
The spirit of the Wild West is alive and well in Texas. The state has preserved it’s cowboy heritage through various live events and activities. All across the state, you’ll find rodeos – impressive shows in which cowboys and cowgirls test their horse-riding and bull-riding skills. Traditional country and Western with plenty of places to experience live country and practice your line dancing skills.
Explore the history
There’s also a lot of history to explore in Texas. One of its most famous attractions is The Alamo in San Antonio – the site of one of Texas revolution’s most bloody battles. There’s also The San Jacinto monument near Houston – the site where Texas gained its independence. Austin’s Texas State Capitol is also worth a visit – the building was constructed in the late 1800s and is still used today for much of the state’s law-making.
Take in the natural wonders
Texas is also home to a number of natural wonders. A popular hotspot for hikers and mountain bikers is Big Bend – this national park is home to scenic limestone cliffs, hot springs and an array of desert wildlife including kit foxes and bobcats. There’s enchanted rock where you can find large and awe-inspiring rock formations. Texas is also home to dazzling shorelines and spectacular caverns. There’s something for all kinds of nature lovers.
