The first students enter the newly chartered Howard University. Dr. Mordecai W. Johnson will become Howard’s first Black president from 1926-1956.
1924
Singer "Big Maybelle" Smith is born in Jackson, TN. She is noted for her songs “Put Yourself In My Place”, “Only You”, and “What Are You Doing To Me?”.

1950
Poet Gwendolyn Brooks becomes the first Black awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her book, "Annie Allen." She was a leading poet and an important figure in the Black Arts movement of the 1960s through 1970s
