A quick dry scalp solution for the busy traveler

The problem

It seems that every curly girl goes through years of trying to figure out the perfect hair maintenance routine: a combination of the right products, the frequency of washing and the perfect hairstyles. I have finally figured out the perfect routine for my own hair; but with my lifestyle being so erratic as a travel correspondent, journalist and entrepreneur, it is very hard to stay on routine.

Add to that the different climates from around the world - one day I could be in Norway and the next in the Caribbean- and in no time, despite my knowledge of knowing what to do to keep my hair healthy, I am suffering from dry, itchy, and flaky scalp.

This was a terribly big and frustrating problem for me as a kid; but like I said, I have finally figured out what works for me.

It’s not just my problem
Working with the Head & Shoulders team, I learned that these scalp problems are not just my own.  According to an internal study done by Head & Shoulders, 71% of black women said they experienced or were concerned with an itch, dry or flaking scalp in the past month.

Scalp issues are a challenge for black women, in particular, for several reasons. Many times, it is because it takes so long to style the creative looks we love and we extend our wash cycle to keep the style as long as possible. We all have heard the warning of “don’t get my hair wet!” Well, without the moisture, we are drying out our scalp.

Did you know that dandruff is fungus?

Beyoncé made a dance move out of patting your weave. The origin of that is that it’s the quickest way to relieve an itchy scalp through the braided maze under the extensions. According to an internal study done by Head & Shoulders, 73% of black women use an oil on the scalp to soothe itch, moisturize the scalp and get scalp relief. But, they have found that some of these habits and practices can exacerbate scalp issues. Why? Well, a key cause to these scalp issues is not being effectively addressed. Dandruff and its symptoms, such as itch and dryness, are a result of a skin response to the fungus malassezia globosa that is present on almost everybody’s scalp. This fungus feeds off of the scalp’s natural oils. While for some people it poses no problems, for others, the result of the skin response can be dryness, itching, a feeling of tightness and flaking. Many women think the cause of their scalp issues like itching and flaking is dryness, but it’s actually not. These scalp issues are because of an allergic reaction to the fungus that lives on most everyone’s scalp.

A solution

In order to effectively address the key cause of scalp issues and provide relief, you need a product with an ingredient called zinc prythione (ZPT), a scalp care active that inhibits the growth of malassezia globosa and provides scalp health. Researchers at Head & Shoulders developed a Clinical Solutions Leave-On Treatment with ZPT which is delivered directly to the scalp in between washes - and so I gave it a try.
My test

The first time I used it was after a long trip and I was too tired to do my full wash day. I was having very itchy scalp and sprayed the Head & Shoulders Clinical Solutions Leave-On Treatment on my scalp. I was surprised at the immediate soothing and cooling feeling. My scalp no longer itched, and the relief lasted the rest of the day.

This product fights itchy, dry and flaking scalp. It’s a spray that can be used out-of- the-shower for fast-acting relief from scalp issues in between washes. I only needed to use it once a day. But, you can use it several times, according to the relief you need!

So, are you going to give it a try?

  1. The scalp dries when the sebaceous glands can not release enough sebum , which is responsible for providing the necessary lubrication to the scalp , and not having enough lubrication to keep the skin hydrated can cause the scalp to become sensitive and the uncomfortable itching appears.

A common mistake is to think that dandruff and dry scalp is a similar problem , but it is not quite so. Dandruff is usually caused by a fungal infection , while dry scalp can arise from other and varied reasons.
