History was made on this day March 16

1827
The first Black newspaper, Freedom's Journal, is published by J.B. Russwurm and S.E. Cornish in New York. It becomes the first black-owned
newspaper.
1846
Dr. Rebecca Cole, the second Black female physician
in America, is born.
1870
U.S. Senator Hiram R. Revels, who was elected by the Mississippi legislature to fill the seat formerly held by Jefferson Davis, makes first official speech before the U.S. Senate.
