William Dawson, who will become the U.S. Representative for Illinois, is born in Albany, GA.
Singer Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, "Mother of the Blues", is born in Columbus, GA. She will record with Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong.

William "Count" Basie, jazz band leader, dies in Hollywood, FL. He helped popularize the big band movement and was one of the first two Blacks to win Grammy Awards.
