How to be a Minimalist

It all began with a book. Well, the new minimalist movement anyway, IMO. People started snapping up copies of "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing" by Marie Kondo, and off they went.

Tiny houses, reduced carbon footprints, less of...everything. It's the way our families lived generations ago, and it's making a comeback in a big way.

Here are a few tips for how to embrace the minimalist movement:

View your home with a critical eye:

Have you used/worn/enjoyed each item in the past year? If not, let it go. Someone else may be able to make good use of it, and for now, it's just added clutter in your life. (Be mindful of what someone else can use, and what is actually trash. Throw out the trash!)

Cut back on social media:

Social media takes up a LOT of time. What is that cluttering? Your mind! You could be: reading; meditating; spending time with family. The possibilities are endless. Give it a whirl!

Organize:

An organized environment frees up extra time for fun. The less time spent looking for things that ought to have a place, the better. This can be an overwhelming task. Begin by doing one room at a time. If you have a super organized friend or family member, ask for their help. It's a daunting task for most, but in the end, it's well worth the reward!
