What's the deal with plastic surgery??

It all began in 8th grade. I still wasn’t growing much, but my nose sure was. And I was awkward. I had horrible skin, stringy hair, and the wardrobe of a kid who was not privileged. Mind you, I blame no one for any of this. It’s just a bit of background for you.

That's me in the middle, probably about a year before the note came sailing on to my desk.

As I was bent over my desk, studiously attempting to finish my work, I felt a bit of a shove and a neatly folded note landed on my desk. I turned my head, and saw two classmates looking at me. Their anticipatory stares and smirks made it clear that they were the authors of the note. It had only four words on it.

"Big-nosed zit face"

The words stung. They were stating the obvious, and when you’re 13 years old, nothing is worse than the words hurled at you by other girls your age. I’d already spent countless hours (and would continue to for the next four years) studying my profile in the mirror, dismayed by the nose that seemed to grow by the day.

High School graduation: 80's hair, and that nose.

One year later, my skin cleared up, my figure filled out, and I began dressing in an inexpensive yet funky style. I became more outspoken. The years of bullying ceased, I had friends, and I was considered “cute”.

I still had that nose though.

The summer after high school graduation, I was in a fairly horrific car accident. It left me with both internal and external injuries, and before I knew it, I was sitting in a plastic surgeon’s office to discuss fixing the new break in my nose and the scarring on my face from the accident. As the surgeon assessed my nose, he asked, “As long as I’m fixing the break, do you want me to give you a better nose?”

Kim Kardashian Everyone's always wondering, "Did she or didn't she?"
You know what? Who cares!

Now don’t go getting all upset about this remark. The man was doing his job. There was no arguing the fact that I had not grown into my nose. The doctor’s one stipulation was that I did not come in with a bunch of photos of what I wanted my nose to look like, but rather placed my trust in his expertise. “You want it to look natural after all,” he explained. I certainly did.

So what’s the deal with plastic surgery?

For me, I have to say it was life altering. Having my nose reshaped changed the entire look of my face, and for the first time in my life, I was content with the way I looked. The doctor did indeed do as he promised – it’s been 27 years, and nobody has ever known my nose was not in its original state. I went from having a profile that brought me to tears, to one I have often been complimented on. It may sound superficial, but it makes me happy. I’ve never regretted it.

About a year ago a friend presented me with a gift: a painting she had done of me, in profile.

Plastic surgery becomes more popular by the year.

Are we a country obsessed with outward appearances? Absolutely. Does our media give young girls the message that perfection is both a must and attainable? Again, a hearty yes! With that stated, plastic surgery is a personal decision, and one that I made as an adult.

Joan Rivers made no apologies for her excessive plastic surgery - only jokes.

Though some people go WAY overboard in their quest for beauty, (and I do think doctors should restrain from performing insane amounts of unnecessary surgeries on one face/body – hello, Heidi Montag) the decision is each person’s to make.
