Car Accidents And Insurance Companies: 3 Things You Need To Know

There are around 6 million car accidents in the US every year, according to statistics.
Around 3 million people are injured within those accidents, and on a daily basis, there are around 90 fatalities.

Of course, you can minimize the danger to yourself by driving safely. However, what you can't do is control the behaviors of the other drivers around you. So despite your best efforts at staying safe, there is no guarantee your fellow road users will be following suit.

As a consequence, you might fall into those statistics should another driver instigate an accident.

Not only will you have to deal with the physical and financial pain that ensues, but you will also have to deal with the other driver's insurer if you decide to claim for compensation. This is where things can get complicated because, despite your best actions after the accident, you might not get all the money that should be owed to you.

Here are some of the things you need to know about insurance companies.

#1: An insurance adjuster doesn't care for your best interests
An insurance adjuster's job is to determine how much the other driver's insurer should pay out on your claim. However, their principal aim is to protect the best interests of the insurance company rather than your own, so when making you a compensation offer, they might try to lowball you with a less-than-sufficient offer. Our advice: Don't take it! There is much you need to take into account, from auto repairs and medical care, and that first offer might not cover all of your expenses.

#2: The insurance company might call you out to be a liar
To avoid paying compensation, the insurer might accuse you of lying about the damages to your car or to yourself. This is underhanded, we know, especially if you're being honest about the damages incurred. To remove yourself from accusations of fraud and other dishonest behavior, you need to provide evidence. So, keep a record of the expenses you incurred at the auto shop (being sure to attend a garage of your choice, and not a body shop recommended by the insurer), and ask your doctor for written proof that your injuries were as a result of the accident.

#3: The insurer will try to hurry the claim along
Knowing that you will be in a vulnerable state and keen to get the ordeal over and done with, the insurer will try to pressure you into signing a settlement agreement. They might even tempt you into doing so by giving a better offer if you turned down the first figure they gave you. However, hold fire. The insurance company might still be trying to cheat you out of money owed, and so you might get far less than you deserve. Our advice: Seek legal help. The right attorney will understand the strategies that insurance companies take, and will help you to make sensible decisions. While they might not be in your particular area, take a look at the services offered by Robinette Legal Group's personal injury lawyers as an example of the help you can expect.

So, while I hope that you never get into a car accident, it is still worth paying attention to the points listed here in the event that you do. What has been your experience with insurance companies?
