Big-Ups Coach Steph Ready

Did you see TNT's coverage of the first round of the NBA finals Sunday night? You may have noticed the smooth introduction to the national stage of Stephanie Ready at the Indiana vs New Jersey game.
She was very impressive, and I anticipated the comments and remarks by the hosts as then cut back to the Atlanta studios. I expected them or someone later in the media to comment on how cute she was; but to my surprise, they just gave her "big ups" for the great job she did. And, again she was on point! She didn't miss a beat.

I met Steph last summer at a journalist convention in a sports seminar, and one of the things she talked about was that no matter what a woman sports journalist has done...she always has to justify her credibility upfront. (It's very frustrating to me that a man on the sidelines automatically gets the "go", but if you see a female, you need to know what she has done, where she came from, and how much sports trivia she has?!) People feel they have the right to give the same weight to her looks as they do to her sports knowledge and performance.

And that's why Steph Ready gets the "Big-Ups" this week. She was so sharp she left no room for all of that non-sense. Her credentials...well:
She's a former baller herself, but in 2001 the NBDL named Stephanie Ready the assistant coach of the Greenville Groove...which means she made history. Here's the headlines: Steph Ready Becomes the First Woman to Coach in Men's Professional Sports. Then in 2004, the Charlotte Bobcats announced Steph as part of their on-air team. She put it down, and had clout with the players too.
I understand the looks a female gets as she enters the locker-rom for post-game interviews. Steph retold an incident when she first started reporting and some players said "Hey, what's up coach!" She laughed as her new media colleagues, other players and coach's gave her respect after that.
I am very proud of you coach Steph!
