How To Make Friends As An Adult

Making friends as an adult is much harder than it was when you were a kid. As a child, we meet our friends at school, but as an adult, that pool of potential friends isn’t there. It can be especially tough to meet like-minded people to make friends with if you’re single, don’t have room-mates, work freelance, or have moved somewhere new for work. Here are some ideas to help you meet and make new friends as an adult, and take control of the situation.

  1. Find meetups for your interests. Joining something new doesn’t always have to be as formal as a club or class. Look online for meet-ups for things you’re interested in. Do you have an encyclopedic knowledge of Buffy The Vampire Slayer? Do you love to go on hikes? There’s probably a meet up for that either in your local area or online. This app has the best virtual events, with everything from classes to parties.
  2. Take a class. Have you always wanted to learn how to cook Spanish food, or how to speak French? Join an evening class. Whether you’re learning Yoga or make-up skills, you already know that you will have at least one thing in common with everyone in the class. Be friendly, and chat to people in your class. You can even take the lead and suggest a drink after class to a few people.
  3. Ask your existing friends. If you have some friends already, but would like to expand your circle, ask the friends you already have to introduce you to their friends. This can be very effective, especially if you’ve moved to a new city where you only know one or two people. Ask if you can join them when they meet up with other friends, and there’s a good chance you’ll like the people your friends choose to spend their time with.
  4. Join a club. A sports club or a book club can be a great place to meet people. Sign up for a tennis club, kickball, or your building’s social hours and meet people who already have similar interests to you. As with the classes, suggest something like going for a coffee after the club is finished for the day to get to know a few people better.
  5. Look for support groups. If you're a caregiver to family or have just separated from a spouse, look for a support group for people in your situation. This can be very helpful, as not only will you be able to get some support, but you’ll also meet people who understand what you’re going through. You’re also already over the awkward part of answering difficult questions about your life, as everyone in the room has the same experience. There are support groups for all kinds of things, from living with a chronic condition to being a struggling new mom.

Making friends as an adult takes some bravery and putting yourself out there. But pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone is the best strategy to expanding your social circle.
