Travel: Discover Savannah

I was in need for a quick getaway...

so I called a girlfriend and headed south to Savannah, Georgia!

Did you know that Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia?
It was established in 1733 and became the colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. These days a trip will take you back in time, and as you walk the squares, the rich history of the south hits you in the face.

I tired my best to take in as much as I could on the two day excursion.

Oh, also many famous movies were filmed there which makes it the favorite destination of some pretty big celebrities.

Anyway, I stayed at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront.
I had a significant discount, thanks to my friend Rod, who works at Marriott hotels...I got a friends & family discount.

Now...it was supposed to be a girls trip...
but my friend decided to bring her boyfriend!
I was gracious about it; but still haven't confronted her about it.

It was only a two day trip, and so we made the most out of our exploration.
First stop was Mrs Wilkes' Dining Room.
A co-worker told me about it and as soon as we got in town, we...
stood in the line.

It was about an hour wait. But it was oh...so worth it.
Cost about $20/person...flat rate.
You eat family style.
And there is more Southern food than you could ever imagine!
THIS IS THE SOUTHERN SAVANNAH EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WANT!

It was a gloomy day.
But you can't keep this beach lover away from the beach!

We encountered a storm on the way to the beach. But managed to squeeze in a brief walk before the storm clouds warned us to retreat!

The next morning...bright and early...

We hopped on a trolley and took a tour of this beautiful, historical town.
There are many options for tours: ghost tours, in particular, are very popular in this old town. But I chose a historical, narrated one.
Savannah has 22 squares today that provide locals and visitors alike with a little greenery amid all the businesses and historic houses.
We had a blast playing in the squares and, yes, I took the dare to get in the fountain.

In the afternoon...
We took a riverboat tour.
It was a chance to rest our legs and eat!
I admit, this wasn't the prettiest or most enjoyable tour.
The views were quite bland...even industrial.
But...the food was very good, and southern.
We hopped back on the trolley...
and walked the streets and squares again...
You can see the line growing at Paula Dean's restaurant.
We actually didn't go. This trip was months after her big media disaster.

One of the first things the locals make sure to tell you is that the Girl Scouts of America were founded in Savannah by Juliette Gordon Low
And, we couldn't leave without checking out First African Baptist Church. Which, it's reported to be derived from the first black Baptist congregation in North America.

Additional Quick Tips:

  • Best times to go: According to Trip Advisor, a spring trip will offer you the most temperate weather and flowers, plants and trees will be in bloom. Add the ocean wind and the air is naturally fragrant.

  • Safe to travel alone: yes.

  • Cheap travel tip: Keep your eye out for Groupons, Living Social or whatever other daily deal sites you subscribe to. Throughout the year boutique hotels in Savannah will post discounted stays. But make sure to read the fine print for black out days and other booking restrictions before you buy. Don't hesitate to call the dealer to lay out any and all restrictions if they are unclear just by reading them.

  • Tips before you go: Check the visitor's center's  website. Savannah is a destination for many events, conventions and festivals throughout the year. You may want to plan your trip around one or plan your trip to avoid them.
